How does TANTALUS work?

The TANTALUS System applies automatic electrical gastric stimulation during meal times, designed to induce satiety. The system uses implantable electrodes  to sense and monitor the natural activity of the stomach in real-time and to automatically apply a gentle electrical stimulation during meals.

The stimulation enhances the body’s response to food intake, and the end result is reduction in glucose levels and body weight. A special algorithm times each pulse to the patient's naturally occurring gastric activity without pacing it. As a result, the rate of stimulation is dictated by the patient's natural gastric activity. The unique feature of the treatment is the fact that it is adaptable to every patient's specific eating habits and physiology.

The system includes a rechargeable ‘pacemaker-like' implantable pulse generator (IPG) with an external, portable charger, three leads and external control and monitoring components for the patient and physician. The pulse generator and the leads are implanted in a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure which can be performed in an outpatient setting.
